Mujuru's rejection of benefits shrouded in ignorance
02 Sep 2015 at 14:50hrs | Views
Former Vice President Joyce Mujuru's refusal to accept her terminal benefits is a shocking development, considering that it is what she worked for during her tenure of office in Government. It is her natural right to receive the perks as clearly defined in the new national constitution.
This is her entitlement, and there is nothing political about it because they are not coming from Zanu-PF party, but the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe.
This crushes her vague response when she says, "that's water under the bridge, nothing to tie me to anything." Does this suggest that she no longer feels bound by the state to which all citizens are subordinate to?
Her fallout from the party does not make her ineligible to receive what she worked for. And what principle is she subscribing to if she casts herself in such negative light as a former high profile government figure who is driven by emotions and probably arrogance.
On the other hand of her personal life-style, historical profile tells us that, Joyce Mujuru, is such a greedy personality who is currently grappling with tactful ways to out-maneuver her deceased husband Retired Solomon Mujuru's illegitimate children who are believed to as many as ninety. Certainly if someone can plot against the innocent legal beneficiaries of their deceased father's estate, then at the same time she refuses to accept funds for her pensions; this leaves more questions than answers.
Apart from that, she faced ugly allegations of extorting 10% stake from companies as a way of enriching herself through unscrupulous means. During her time in office as Vice President she abused her official position by using state visits to negotiate her personal deals. For instance, when she went to Brazil she struck a deal to import genetically modified organism (GMOs) chickens. Upon her return she force marched Ministry of Agriculture to issue an import permit against the existing ban on importation of chickens which were readily available locally.
When the government was compensating war veterans that were maimed or injured as a result of the war of liberation struggle a few decades ago, she claimed over 100% disability from government coffers. Honestly, if someone suffered 100% disability would that person be as healthy as she is? Surely this is a clear testimony of greediness.
In view of these snippets, it is surprising that she refuses to accept what she rightly deserves in favour of benefits from black deals. Mujuru surely needs to have a serious re-look on her decision to refuse her perks.
