The government has introduced a land rental and development levy to ensure full utilisation of state land by new farmers.
The Minister of Lands and Rural Resettlement, Dr Douglas Mombeshora said the government will start collecting land rentals and development levy from A1 and A2 farmers and other farmers on state land.
The money will be backdated to 1 January 2015.
Holders of valid letters for A2 resettlement plots, self contained plot holders with offer letters, holders of 99-year leases and holders of leases on small scale commercial farms will pay US$3 land rentals annually per hectare and US$2 per hectare for development levy yearly.
Holders of A1 permits or temporary permits will be required to pay US$10 for land rentals and US$15 development levy yearly.
"We are not going back over the matter and we hope this will translate into increased returns," said Dr Mombeshora.
Dr Mombeshora added that government shall cancel offer letters of any farmer who fails to pay rentals for three continuous months.
Revenues from the land rentals will be used by the government towards the management of rural state land while income accrued from the development levy shall be devoted towards infrastructure development in farming areas.
