Matabeleland Institute for Human Rights(MIHR) wishes to convey its sincere condolences to the Masuku family, the people of Matobo District, the province of Matabeleland South and the entire people of Matabelelan region, on the sad passing of brave, illustrious, committee and tough-tongued human rights defender - Chief Malaki Masuku.
Chief Masuku was during his life and tenure, a dedicated Chief who fought for the rights and welfare of his subjects. Recently Chief Masuku led his subjects to resist the takeover of Maleme Ranch in the Nathisa area by a District Intelligence Officer. The takeover of Maleme Ranch was going to leave over 800 families economically disenfranchised and violate their economic, educational, employment and social rights.
Chief Masuku has also been vocal for the violation of the locals' cultural rights through the defilement of the Njelele Shrine and the deployment of non-locals in the civil service and the Matobo National Park.
He leaves behind a community that is scared by numerous cultural rights but that is encouraged to continue his quest for social and economic justice as espoused in the Constitution and the philosophy of devolution of Power.
As an independent think tank that exists to promote the protection and enjoyment of rights by the people of Matabeleland, Matabeleland Institute for Human Rights wishes to take this opportunity to encourage the Chief Masuku subjects to continue with the legacy of the Chief and to continue speaking out openly for their rights and freedoms. Chief Masuku spoke out for human rights without fear and or favour and this should be the guiding principle that should be emulated by his subjects and the heir of his throne.
