Political coalitions, the right way to go

01 Jun 2016 at 16:17hrs | Views

On Tuesday 31 May 2016, opposition parties in Zimbabwe made history by signing the Coalition of Democrats Agreement (CODE).

Political parties who were party to this Agreement that managed to append their signatures to the document today are; ZUNDE, DARE, MDC led by Prof Welshman Ncube, RDZ and MKD.

The CODE Agreement is a framework of cooperation for opposition political parties, which is a framework that has been established historically, for the first time in Zimbabwe exactly 24 months before the next harmonised election in 2018.

This is indeed a game changer for Zimbabwean politics as political parties have put aside their differences in order to work for the common good of Zimbabwe.

It will ensure that the vote of the opposition remains the vote of the opposition by fielding only one candidate in all contested positions and at all levels, the Local Government, National Assembly, Senate and most importantly, the Presidency.

In due course, CODE will unveil its Programme of Action. The Programme of Action will be implemented by various committees that have been provided for in the CODE Agreement, which will have each member of a political party being represented therein.

These committees include but are not limited to the Elections Committee, the Youth Committee, the Women's Committee and the International Relations Committee.

The PDP would like to offer its heartfelt congratulations to the parties that signed the document on Wednesday.  Well done fellow compatriots and friends in the struggle for putting Zimbabwe first. The people of Zimbabwe have suffered too much and for too long to continue to be separated by petty political differences.

The PDP also firmly believes in the values of the CODE, which include; tolerance, servant leadership, equality, accountability, unity and the spirit of Ubuntu.

The PDP would like to assure the nation that it is a firm believer that a strong and formidable coalition is the only key to unseating the dictator that has tormented and held Zimbabwe at ransom for the past 36 years.

The PDP firmly believes that there is need for unity of purpose to create a new Zimbabwe and as our President Tendai Biti clearly reiterated this yesterday; "if you want to go fast go alone, [but] if you want to go far go with others".

We hope to complete our internal processes soon and too append our signatures to a process we have been a part of since 2014.

Another Zimbabwe is possible.
