UNITED DEMOCRATIC FRONT, NATIONAL ELECTORAL REFORM AGENDA, COALITION, DIASPORA VOTE IN PERSPECTIVE and OFFICIAL INVITATION TO PRESS CONFERENCE
Tuesday 6 September 2016
10:15
For the attention of media houses and personalities
1.About United Democratic Front
United Democratic Front , hereafter known as UDF is a new political movement whose quest is to govern Zimbabwe in 2018 and beyond.
UDF is founded upon the principles of constitutionalism, constitutional democracy, respect for human dignity and the Zimbabweans' right to free and fair elections, not only as a value but as a constitutional right as well as the rule of law.
The objective of this press release is to
• invite the Zimbabwean, South African as well as international media to zoom in and further intensity efforts towards national electoral reform in Zimbabwe
• place emphasis on the rights of Zimbabweans in the diaspora to participate in the upcoming national elections in 2018 and beyond.
Empowering Provisions
• The Constitution of the Republic of Zimbabwe
• Zimbabwe Electoral Act
2.Diaspora Vote in Perspective
"UDF seeks to engage in all processes with relevant institutions of government such as the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission as well as the courts to advocate for the non discriminatory involvement of Zimbabweans in the Diaspora to meaningfully engage in national politics and all national empowerment programmes.
Zimbabweans in the diaspora have been sustaining the Zimbabwean economy and yet prior to the launch of UDF no political party in existence had ever placed emphasis on their right to voice their opinions through the ballot box. Perhaps the greatest injustices of all time has been their denial of the right to vote in all elections in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has the largest percentage of its population based outside the country. UDF seeks an end to the perpetuation of this unjustified discrimination against Zimbabweans in the diaspora.
UDF has already started to approach the government and will further engage the courts in Zimbabwe with a view to ensure that the provisions of the new constitution that gives a vote to all Zimbabweans including those in the diaspora is realigned with Zimbabwean law so as to take immediate effect.
Participation in the 2018 elections
Failure by the government to urgently address this long overdue issue will not result in UDF boycotting the elections but will seek to delay any polls that are designed to exclude citizens in the Diaspora." Says UDF Interim President Mr. Silence Chihuri
