Simple rigging proof mechanism

17 Jul 2018 at 18:03hrs | Views
Dear Editor,

There have been numerous accusations and counter-accusations about possibility of rigging in the elections. It is hard to know what is true or false and what is possible and what is impossible as numerous theories have emerged.

I came across an article on social media authored by a team called Pachedu. I was immediately struck by one of their suggestions for its simplicity and practicality.

An independent process monitored by all parties must be set up to count all the voters per polling station participating on the day of the election.

What this means is that per each polling station the number of participants will be known with 100% certainty and hence this number can easily be compared to the total votes cast per polling station. By so doing the issue of ghost voters and all the other theories will fall away as real voters will have been counted.

This can be done by simple asking the voters to use their fingerprint on a counter of a defined finger on their way out.

The technology used should be such that each finger print can only be entered into the system once. That will only leave the issue of the so-called migrating X.

That can be addressed if it is true through other means such as sampling. But the counting of the actual voters plus the actual votes on the day of the election to me sounded like a simple compromise which I am sure all parties can quickly agree to and implement. That way they will be no disputed election.

Yours faithfully,
