VMCZ response to SW Radio Africa on their withdrawal from VMCZ
Tuesday 27 August 2013.
Dear Gerry Jackson,
The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe acknowledges receipt of your email written to us on behalf of your respected radio station, Short Wave Radio Africa (SW Radio Africa) on Monday 26 August 2013.
In your email you advised that SWRadio Africa has withdrawn its membership from the VMCZ. The reason you imply in making this decision is that the VMCZ wrongly congratulated ZiFM Stereo radio station on the occasion of its first anniversary.
The VMCZ, while recognizing the right of your respected radio station to chose institutions it would prefer to associate with, humbly disagrees with your assertion that it acted wrongly or contrary to its specific mandate. The VMCZ in its congratulatory statement made no reference to personalities but the institution that is ZiFM on the basis of its subscription to the VMCZ Media Code of Conduct.
The VMCZ works with all media that subscribes to the latter code. Be they in the state or privately controlled spheres.
Further, the VMCZ also receives and adjudicates media complaints from across the media divide with the intention of continuing the work in progress toward arriving at a free, publicly accountable, professional, ethical and self regulating media.
In this regard and not withstanding your regrettable withdrawal from VMCZ, SW Radio Africa is free to file a media complaint against programme content broadcast by Zi-FM. Both in regard to the issues that you cite in your letter as well as in your continued monitoring of that specific station's content.
Yours sincerely,
