Let's restore sanity in public utilities!

Dear Editor
I wonder why corruption and some higher levels of incompetence are rampant in our public utilities. Is it the type of people who are deployed to execute such national tasks who are under-qualified? Or it is the system which has loop-holes to permit looting with impunity?
The Government needs to take stern measures to make the system air-tight to seal all perforations which enable plundering of public funds meant to sustain lives for the entire population.
It is embarrassing to note that public utilities like ZBC, Air Zimbabwe, PSMAS, NRZ, ZESA, ZINWA, and NSSA, to mentioned but a few, make ugly headlines in the media everyday as a matter of routine for the wrong reasons. The public is equally worried why such rot is left to rule with no solution in sight.
Some defined public figures that are named as active accomplices in some of those rotten bodies face impunity. So where are we going with such type of behavior? What are we seeking to achieve as nation? How are we going to rescue our crumbling economic situation?
I urge the Government to craft a piece of legislation which empowers law enforcement authorities to deal with such culprits who convert public utilities for self-aggrandizement. The budgetary deficit faced by the Government can be averted if all loop-holes are closed and direct all funds for national development.
I also feel that critical appointments for national strategic points should be given to properly qualified persons of traceable public repute. They should be vetted to safe-guard public funds, and to ensure that they are not entrusted into risky hands.
These bad apples are stifling our national image locally and internationally as we are labelled a haven for gross corruption.
Let's stress the need to employ optimum Corporate Governance Ethics. And say ‘NO' to corruption which sways development!
One mind boggling issue is that, some of the thick-headed public figures are found sitting in several boards despite their tainted images. Does Zimbabwe run short supply of manpower to warrant over-ladening one person to exist in several boards like that? It's ridiculous considering the fact that, our country has a literacy level which is above 95%.
It is imperative that we restore sanity now to pave way for the continuity of our beloved nation!
