Too many police road blocks

07 Aug 2014 at 15:08hrs | Views
EDITOR,

I'm appalled by the operations of traffic police along Chiremba Road where one can find no less than three to four police road-blocks within a 20km stretch of road to Epworth.

A trip that is supposed to take only 20 minutes is now taking around 40 minutes as kombi drivers haggle with police and many times detour to avoid the numerous police roadblocks.

To compound the situation, Hatfield police are ignoring tickets issued by other traffic police on the same route.

What it means is that kombi operators end up paying a huge chunk of their takings to police and consequently, the drivers start overspeeding to meet targets, resulting in accidents.

Could the responsible authorities or responsible officer at Hatfield Police Station clear this issue? Are officers right in refusing to accept other stations' tickets.

At the same time, we need clarification on how many roadblocks are allowed on a 20km stretch of road. Surely, three roadblocks are too many.

Bitter Commuter,

Harare.
