As a concerned member of the Zambezi community i would like to register the community's concern over teacher absentism and lateness. While we are happy with the remarkable progress made in the establishment of the school our greatest challenge has been teachers absentism. This is an area which is very clear to the Headmaster of the mother school [Siansundu Sec] who usually gives a leeway for the teachers to absent themselves.
In term 1, 2014 [name supplied] a history and Religious Studies teacher was absent for two weeks only to arrive at the station with a fake doctor's report which protected him from being charged by the headmaster. The Acting Headmistress of the school who is believed to be out of station as of now on church business has a tendency of being absent from work on social and personal business using the school's meagre resources. Our concern is that this will result in the poor performance of pupils. The fundamental question which we have as concerned community members is, are these teachers actually teaching? Pupils spend most of their study time fetching firewood and water for teachers at the expense of their school work.
12:47pm, 27 Jun - +263 77 ▩▩▩ ▩▩▩▩: It is now clear that the poor pass rate recorded in the district's schools is due to teachers absentism. As the community we discovered that the main underlying reasons for the high absentee rate of teachers are lack of supervision by the DEO, the Headmaster of the mother school and a general lack of proper mechanisms for intra school supervision. This denies pupils the approved instruction time. In addition the school has four teachers such that when one teacher is absent the gap is felt as the teacher will be taking atleast two subjects.
The school does not have syllabuses and textbooks and this is a recipe for disaster. Furthermore, the teachers use corporal punishment on the pupils which is not allowed by the statutory instrument and this is a clear case of child abuse. We are appealing to the DEO Mr. Masungo to help us by restoring sanity at this school and the school community led apparatus [SDC] to closely monitor the teachers at this school. Two of the teachers are non-Tonga and address our children in Ndebele which the pupil have little or no understanding or. The outspoken Ndebele speaking teachers boast of their Ndebele culture and refuse to learn the local language for the benefit of our children.
