19:25, 9 Feb - +263 7* *** ****: Service delivery by some nurses at Hurungwe Rural District Hospital at Magunje growth point in Mashonaland West province is very poor and leaves a lot to be desired. Especially, nurses working in the post natal department are actually compromising newly born babies' health. They are not administering vaccinations to babies as per the ministry's regulation alleging that there are no vaccinations in stock.
Surprisingly, why do they seek to establish numbers of babies turned up for each and every category on the vaccination schedule only at last to turn away mothers falling under the category having numbers perceived to be large. This has happened today. Mothers were instructed around 10 am by a certain male nurse to show by raising up their hands the vaccine they needed for their babies. Then to the surprise of caring mothers, a senior female nurse taking cognisance of the statistics told the them that they are only able to vaccinate 14 weeks, 9 months and 18 months. Those in need of 6 weeks and 10 weeks vaccinations were turned away as usual alleging that there was no medication and should check willingly, no tentative or probable date was given to them.
Cases of babies not getting vaccinations as per schedule are rampant at this hospital. BCGs are being administered to newly born babies usually after at least a week after birth and having delivered at the very same medical institution. As such, majority of new babies are being discharged without any medication given to them. As for the remaining vaccinations, luck counts now or 'whom do you know' rule sets in. Although it might be true that they may not be having proper vaccinations for respective age groups, it is worry some given persistence of the crisis. I see it as an act of misconduct and negligence on the side of whoever responsible for the overall administration of this rural hospital. There is no alternative health centre or hospital nearby which offers vaccinations. Lanlory Clinic, Karoi Hospital or Chidamoyo Mission hospital are a distance away. Please may the powers that be investigate overall service delivery at this institution asap.
