INDEPENDENCE Cup holders Highlanders will not get an opportunity to defend their title this year after the organisers opted for last year's top four clubs in the Castle Lager Premiership.

The semi-finals of the cup will be played on 11 April with the final set for the giant National Sports Stadium on Independence Day.

Bosso defeated their nemesis Dynamos 4-3 on penalties after the match had ended 0-0 in regulation time, in a match in which DeMbare penalty taker Guthrie Zhokinyi had a nightmarish afternoon, missing two spotkicks.

Zhokinyi missed in regulation time and during shootouts while Highlanders missed their first kick taken by Innocent Mapuranga before burying the remaining four.

Dynamos finished the season as champions, debutants FC Platinum were runners-up while 2010 league champions Motor Action finished third with Hwange taking the fourth slot.

Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze confirmed that the top for teams will participate in the independence trophy.

He said the Premier Soccer League would conduct a draw for the semi-finals.

The Zifa chief executive said there was no corporate sponsor but the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture was going to fund the event.

Dynamos, Hwange and Motor Action have been to the final of the Uhuru Cup.

The Independence Cup has generally been dominated by Highlanders and Dynamos as the two clubs have appeared 25 times in the final. Dynamos won the trophy six times while Highlanders won it five times.
