THE Premier Soccer League has appointed former Highlanders chairman Kenny Ndebele as the substantive chief executive and immediately tasked him to spearhead the organisation's drive to become a commercial success.
League chairman Twine Phiri yesterday confirmed the board of governors had finalised the appointment after going through a rigorous vetting exercise.
Phiri said the post, which was advertised in the media last month, had attracted several high profile names.
Ndebele will be tasked with the daily operations of the organisation in pursuit of their long cherished dream to become an entity that is a commercial success story.
Ndebele, who has been holding the post in an acting capacity since last year, beat about seven other prospective candidates to the position.
"I can confirm that Ndebele is the new CEO. We had received an overwhelming response from highly qualified people after advertising for this posts last month and we shortlisted those with impressive curriculum vitaes for interviews.
"In the end we settled for the candidate who scored the most points according to our requirements. "As you know we are trying to commercialise the league and among his tasks, the new CEO has been asked to revamp structures such as Marketing, Media, Public Relations, IT and Finance and Administration," said Phiri.
The chief executive's basic responsibilities include the implementation of the decisions and policies of the executive committee and the administration of the secretariat.
The league has had no substantive chief executive since Chris Sambo quit the post in 2006.
Ndebele is expected to be formally introduced to the clubs at the league's annual meeting next weekend.
He revealed yesterday that he was excited by the appointment and declared his readiness to work toward the turning the league into a professional entity.
He said the PSL will hold a strategic planning workshop that will help direct the operations of the league.
"The overall goal is professionalisation of the league but in the immediate term we have to assist the clubs to come up with working structures. We also need to engage stakeholders like Zifa, Swaz, the coaches, the footballers union, referees and everyone involved to see how we can improve our game.
"Our league is ranked 12th best in Africa but we are saying we should be somewhere in the top five in the next three to five years.
"I don't doubt the talent that we have here and it's good that we were awarded four slots in the Caf competitions. We have to come up with marketing strategies to help clubs that participate in the African tournaments and, of course, we are talking about sponsorship and marketing the product," said Ndebele.
The season is scheduled to begin on March 6 when reigning Premiership kings Motor Action engage BancABC Sup8r champions Dynamos in the traditional Charity Shield.
The full fixtures programme will then get underway the following weekend. It has been confirmed that the league will have a title sponsor this year.
"The inspection of the stadia has already begun and right now we are busy putting things together. We have requested all clubs to submit their documents for administrative purposes by Friday (tomorrow), but the window period for the transfer of players will close at a later date.
"Clubs will register 25 regular players and five juniors who are under the age of 19 years in line with the Harare Declaration which seeks to promote junior development," said Ndebele.
