Cash strapped Highlanders invited politicians and businessmen from the Southern Region to a private meeting on Saturday, where the club solicited for financial help in pledges to pay off a $160 000 debt. Even Delma Lupepe attended the fundraising meeting.

At the meeting, held at the Highlanders clubhouse, long time benefactor Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube pledged to give the Bulawayo football giants $8 200 while a South African businessman Phatudi Maponya promised Bosso $10 800.

Minister of Mines and Mining Development, another Bosso benefactor, who was also invited to the meeting, said he will be chipping in while Zapu president Dumiso Dabengwa, made a private pledge.

Dube's son Vusumuzi also promised to give Highlanders two beasts.

Highlanders treasurer Odiel Nkomo said other people at the meeting had made private pledges, which they did not want to be announced but if all these are honoured it means Bosso is set to receive more than $20 000 from the Bulawayo community.

"There are some people, who have made pledges that they don't want to be announced but have just been noted by the office staff at the tables," Nkomo said.

Nkomo also revealed that Highlanders had a budget of $600 000 for the 2012 season.

Mpofu said he will be coming to Highlanders' rescue but had no kind words, lambasting maladministration.

"This is the third time that I have come to Highlanders. I am not a fan of Highlanders. I am a fan of the Highlanders family. You have well-wishers and one of them is me but where is the problem? You are winning, yes but where is the problem. I have spent almost $30 000 for Highlanders without being asked but I will do more. If you are failing, let's talk," Mpofu said.

The meeting was attended by several businessmen, including former AmaZulu owner Delma Lupepe.

Meanwhile, Highlanders have won a tender to run a yet to be identified Bulawayo local authority beer garden in the high density suburbs.

This was confirmed by board member Mgcini Nkolomi at the meeting.

Nkolomi read a speech on behalf of the board chairman Dumisani Sandi, who was not present.

Former broadcaster and board member Luke Mnkandla, was the master of ceremony at the function, which was also attended by board members Retired Colonel Thomas Ngwenya, Justice Nicholas Mathonsi, the Highlanders executive committee members, chairman Peter Dube, his deputy Sikhanyiso Moyo, Nkomo, secretary Andrew Tapela and committee member Charles Moyo.

On Thursday, Bosso held a press-briefing at the club offices where the chairman Dube said the club is broke to the extent that the team failed to go into camp for the league tie against Black Mambas in Harare last Saturday.

Main sponsors BancABC cater for players and the technical team's salaries.
