Matabeleland South Athletes could miss Barcelona trip

Three Matabeleland South athletes could miss out on competing with the world's best juniors in Spain  in four weeks time as the National Athletic Association of Zimbabwe has hinted that it is broke.

Dumisani Bhebhe, Michael Mlambo and Khuphukile  Chilufya qualified to represent Zimbabwe in Barcelona between 10 and 15 July in the World Junior Championships.

However, their dream is on the knife edge.

In a letter dated 1st June 2012 and addressed to the Chairperson/Secretary Matabeleland  South Athletic Board, Gwanda from the National Athletic Association of Zimbabwe president,  Mungwari Joseph said the association can only afford providing  accommodation and food to the trio.

Therefore, the three athletes need to fork out $1700, each,  return air tickets to Barcelona.

"I am pleased to advise that the following athletes from your athletics Provincial Board have reached set international qualifying standards which will enable them to represent Zimbabwe in the World Junior Championships taking place in Barcelona â€"Spain between the 10th -15th July 2012.

"The Association is therefore appealing for assistance in securing Air Fairs to and from Spain (Economy class) from Harare to Barcelona return. The Association will pay for food and lodging for the period the athletes are in Spain. The cost of air ticket is $ 1 700, 00 for your consideration.

"We look forward to your support so as to enable the athletes take this National duty, please,"  wrote Mungwari.
