THE Highlanders board has reversed the suspension of club treasurer Odiel Nkomo. He was suspended by a three-man finance and turnaround committee led by Mgcini Nkolomi which wanted to pave way for investigations into the club's books.

Board chairman Dumisani Sandi declined to shed more light on the issue when contacted for comment yesterday.

Problems arose three weeks ago when Nkomo flouted an executive decision on how money should be distributed at the cash-strapped club.

Nkomo allegedly took $6 600 from the club's share of the gatetakings after the match against Dynamos without consulting the executive.

"I will not comment on the issue but what I can only say is that some of the information you get in the corridors as newspapers does the club no good at all.

"We are sorting out our issues internally and surely we cannot do that through the papers," said Sandi.

Nkomo alleged that the club owed him money from the era of the former executive led by Themba Ndlela.

When the issue came to light, the executive reported the matter to the board and the Nkolomi committee recommended his suspension which was not procedural since they are a sub-committee.

The board acts on errant executive members.

An executive board meeting was called last Thursday which sources say was emotionally charged as some board members supported the actions of the treasurer.

Some board members who were in support of the suspension allegedly threatened to walk out of the meeting arguing they did not want their corporate good images enmeshed in club politics.

But some stood by the treasurer and his actions.

Nkomo had already gone to his lawyers who were of the view that a sub-committee could not punish him, setting the matter up for discussion by the board.

Nkomo was then summoned to appear before the board of trustees on Saturday morning where he was informed of the decision to reinstate him but was asked to return the money which will be put into a trust account while a forensic audit is carried out.

The club has already engaged a Harare-based audit firm to carry out the job with the results expected anytime this week.

Meanwhile, the Nkomo saga has triggered dormant suspicions within the executive and some members of the board with sources saying that he could be fired if the audit firm unearthes bad practice.
