Highlanders 1 - 2 How Mine
BUSTLING Nqobile Mpala rose from the bench to hand Castle Lager Premier Soccer League debutants How Mine a well deserved victory over city neighbours Highlanders in a lukewarm derby match played at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday.
Mpala wrapped up the match for the gold miners with a superb finish from close range that beat an exposed Highlanders goalkeeper Munyaradzi Diya.
The result saw Bosso drop to second position following FC Platinum's 1-1 draw against Monomotapa on Saturday.
Veteran defender Hebert Dick scored from both ends, the first one being an own goal in the 14th minute after he beat Pedzisayi Gumiremhete the How Mine shot stopper.
Bosso midfielder Peter "Rio" Moyo, who was full of energy, broke loose from the left side of How Mine's defence to deliver an inviting cross which Dick failed to clear under challenge from Beavan Chikaka and in a desperate effort to clear, the former Chicken Inn defender only managed to beat his own goalkeeper and by then the Highlanders party seemed well on course to a normal win at 'home'. However, Dick managed to redeem himself on the stroke of halftime when he nodded the ball home from Timothy January's deeping corner kick.
The first half entirely belonged to Highlanders as How Mine rearguard that was made up of Dick, Gilbert Banda, Brighton Dube and Khumbulani Banda played second fiddle to Chikaka and Milton Ncube who were however let down by an out of sorts Cleopas Dube.
The imposing Dube proved to be wasteful, squandering a number of glorious chances inside the 18 yard box. As a result, the hard to please Bosso fans called for his substitution.
Dumisani "Fazo" Ndlovu, captain Innocent Mapuranga, Simon Munawa and Bruce Kangwa had managed to contain the Simba Sithole led How Mine strike force with so much aplomb.
The second half marked the introduction of Mpala who came in for Lyod Ngara who had a quiet afternoon for the gold miners. The presence of Mpala, a player who failed to make the grade at Bosso during the preseason trials saw the gold miners slowly rising to the occasion. The talented duo of Masuku and former Hwange anchorman Ocean Mpofu began dictating the pace, getting the better of Hillary Madzivanyika and Peter Moyo in the middle of the park.
In the 62nd minute, against the run of play, Mpala released the ball to speedy Sithole who shook off the challenge of Mapuranga before he unleashed a stinger that found Bosso goalkeeper Diya equal to the task.
Three minutes later Rio watched in disbelief when his close range header went over the bar from a Masimba Mambare cross. Bosso's outstanding player of the day Bruce Kangwa had a shot saved by an alert Gumiremhete.
In the 82nd minute, Mapuranga's intended pass to Kangwa was intercepted by Sithole who sent in a beautiful high cross that Munawa failed to clear and the ball fell into the path of Mpala who calmly tapped the ball home.
After the match Highlanders head coach, Kelvin Kaindu said the defeat has put them at a disadvantage ahead of their midweek encounter against bogey side Monomotapa.
