FC Platinum won 3-1 after penalty shootout
FC Platinum stormed into the last four of the BancABC Sup8r Cup when they beat Highlanders in a penalty shootout at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo yesterday.
The match was a very big yawn and those who stayed home saved themselves the agony of watching uninspiring football displayed by both teams.
The loss by Bosso also exerted pressure on their coach, Zambian Kelvin Kaindu, who it is believed some sections of Bosso no longer want to continue with the job as they prefer Willard Khumalo and Rahman Gumbo to take over.
It was also a warm welcome for coach Lloyd Mutasa who is FC Platinum acting head coach and yesterday sat on the bench directing operations.
Francis Tizayi who was a bench warmer in the past one and half seasons emerged the hero of the day when he saved two penalties from Simon Munawa and Bruce Kangwa.
Heritani Masuku hit the upright post while Milton Ncube was the only player to find the target from the spot for Highlanders.
FC Platinum's Charles Sibanda, evergreen captain Daniel Veremu and Joel Ngodzo scored for the Zvishavane based team.
Harare-based referee Nomore Musundure denied Highlanders what looked like a clear penalty in the first half and two more in the second half.
There was no meaningful activity on the field as both teams took turns to miss glaring opportunities that came their way.
In the 22nd minute Aaron Katebe handled the ball in the box under pressure but the referee waved play on to the amazement of Bosso players. In the 26th, the enterprising Thabani Kamusoko who was man-of-the-match unleashed a grounder from the edge of the box which missed the target by a few inches.
In the 31st minute, Bosso's Masimba Mambare blasted the ball over the bar when it looked easier to score than to miss after he was set by Beaven Chikaka who had a bad day in office by his standards. A minute later Mambare who also proved handy to the FC Platinum defence worked past a cluster of defenders before he tumbled in the box under challenge. His appeal for a spot kick was turned down by Masundure.
