Highlanders 0 - 1 Dynamos
DEFENDING Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions Dynamos continued their dominance over arch rivals Highlanders, getting a late goal to take maximum points at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday.
Highlanders have gone for six years without beating the Harare giants in a league match with their last Premiership win over Dynamos coming in Week 17 in 2006 at Barbourfields Stadium. In that match, Highlanders won 2-0 and went on to claim the championship.
The result at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday saw Dynamos shooting to the top of the log from third position, tied on 48 points with Harare City who beat Buffaloes 2-1 on Saturday. DeMbare have a superior goal difference over the ambitious Sunshine City Boys.
The solitary goal at Barbourfields came from the boot of left back Ocean Mushure who converted from the penalty spot four minutes before regulation time.
Mushure was brought down by Mthulisi Maphosa in the box and Gweru-based referee Thabani Bamala pointed to the penalty spot.
However, Bamala seemed to have been overwhelmed by the occasion, failing to take control of the epic clash and in the process spoilt the flow of the game with some questionable officiating.
Both clubs finished the match with 10 players each with Highlanders losing chief striker Njabulo Ncube while Dynamos' defence stalwart Patson Jaure was also given his marching orders in the 30th minute.
Ncube had unnecessarily retaliated after Jaure's bad tackle from behind and things almost got out of hand as both players started shoving each other.
A viciously charging Jaure missed the referee with an uppercut that would have left former Pan African World Boxing heavyweight champion Thamsanqa Dube green with envy. The defensive stalwart had to be restrained by his teammates with the police moving in to quell the chaos.
The game had to be stopped for five minutes.
Ncube could have left the field of play having had propelled his team into the lead but Dynamos' goalkeeper George Chigova made a good save in the 13th minute to deny the striker a goal from close range.
A minute later, Boban Zirintusa threaded a defence-splitting pass to Washington Pakamisa but the Dynamos striker shot wide missing the far post by inches.
Dynamos' striker Patrick Khumbula also had an opportunity to strike at goal but blazed his effort into the stands.
Highlanders should have taken the lead three minutes after halftime when Eric Mudzingwa sent a through pass to Bhekimpilo Ncube who beat an offside trap and came one-on-one with Chigova only to place his effort wide. Nine minutes before the hour mark Bhekimpilo saw his header going across the goal line finding no takers.
Highlanders had the woodwork to thank as Pakamisa's header on the hour mark hit the cross bar with Munyaradzi Diya beaten cleanly.
Action then swung to the other side with Peter Moyo exchanging passes with Bruce Kangwa only for an out of form Mambare to be caught flatfooted in the box as he failed to tap the ball into the nets from close range.
Highlanders' coach Kelvin Kaindu was forced to make an injury inspired substitution in the 78th minute after skipper Innocent Mapuranga picked an injury after closing in on Oscar Machapa who had roasted the defender turning him inside out twice in the box.
