Highlanders midfielder Masimba Mambare has been forced to issue a public statement after he changed his Facebook profile to "former Highlanders player" in frustration over the way he has been treated by the club's fans.

Mambare, who was outstanding for Highlanders in the 2012 season and was duly voted first runner-up in the Soccer Stars of the Year award, was apparently incensed by boos he received from a section of the Highlanders fans during his team's 3-1 win over Shabanie Mine at the weekend.

Highlanders lost out on the league title to rivals Dynamos on goal difference for the second season running, and Mambare, who failed to meet the standards he set himself last season, has been one of players targeted by the club's boo boys in in a year Bosso were generally below their best.

"It's been a long time since I last wrote on my wall but I just felt this time it's worth every second it is going to take just to clear some air here," wrote Mambare.

"..I am not doing this to hide my poor show this season but I want u to know the truth: I am a Bosso player and I am committed to every Highlanders cause. For record's sake, this team gave me a life in football. It gave me dignity and respect, moreover it gave me a family, only God knows how I deeply appreciate all this. I never minded the booing and whistling the fans made on me for I know that's what comes with my job.

"All I ever wanted is to make a team that gave a life proud, give my fans what they ever wanted, a league cup. It's unfortunate we missed one but we have another one to fight for.  I would never betray such a big family as if they mean nothing to me."
