Heath Streak Academy takes off

Former Zimbabwe cricket captain Heath Streak's academy will next week take in its first batch of apprentices as part of their inaugural holiday training programme.
This was revealed at a press conference held at the academy's premises, located at Mcdonalds Sports Club in Bulawayo yesterday.
The Heath Streak Consultancy and Sports Development chief executive Joseph Rego told reporters that enrolment for the holiday training sessions is already underway.
"The academy will throw open its doors to budding, aspiring and professional cricketers from Bulawayo and across the country on December 14," Rego said.
"On offer are several streams of training sessions and these will be conducted by a team of Level 2 and Level 3 coaches headed by former Zimbabwe national team cricketer Gavin Ewing, who will be assisted by John Nyumbu and Godwill Mamhiyo."
Before the press conference, Streak took journalists on a tour of the academy and work is already in progress with workmen busy preparing the grounds and the practice nets.
During the tour, Streak told reporters that the academy will not only focus on cricket, but will incorporate other sporting disciplines as well.
"The idea is to have a multi-purpose sporting facility that is modelled along the lines of the High Performance Centre in Pretoria, South Africa, and already we have had talks with Kirsty Coventry about the possibility of setting up a swimming academy.
"We also have plans to build an all-purpose indoor facility that can be used for a host of sporting disciplines like indoor hockey and five-a-side football."
Rego paid tribute to the Bulawayo community for their support in making Streak's dream a reality.
"I have no doubt that the Heath Streak Academy has started on a good footing and I would like to pay tribute to Raj Modi who has been the financial backbone of this academy," Rego said.
"It is this kind of selflessness that can only make this dream a reality and I am overwhelmed by the support from the corporate world, whose generosity has been instrumental in providing the city of Bulawayo with a world class sporting facility."
Over $100 000 has been spent in revamping the facilities at the academy and Rego expressed confidence that everything will be in place by the time of the official launch in January 2014.
And during the presser, Bulawayo businessman Elifasi Mashaba was presented as the new member of the board of directors of the Heath Streak Consultancy and Sports Development initiative.
