Bulawayo giants Highlanders lock horns with Chapungu while FC Platinum date Shabanie Mine in the CG Msipa Charity Scholarship Foundation soccer tournament set for Gweru and Zvishavane respectively this weekend.
The Highlanders and Chapungu match will be played at Ascot Stadium in Gweru, while the two Zvishavane teams, FC Platinum and Shabanie will fight it out in the mining town at Mandava Stadium.
Both matches have been scheduled for Saturday and the winners battle it out for the $5000 winners' prize in the final on Sunday.
The runners-up are set to pocket $3000, while the third and fourth-placed teams will receive $2000 each.
One of the tournament's organisers, Primrose Faku said the tourney will be graced by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Andrew Langa.
"Minister Langa will officially open the tournament and also hand over the trophy and a cheque to the winners at the end of the games on Sunday," she said.
"The business community sponsored the tourney last year and they have committed to sponsoring it again this year."
Faku said the CG Msipa Scholarship Foundation would benefit from the tournament's gate takings.
"The foundation will be taking gate collections, we are still arranging for the first and second teams' accommodation for the night before the final and we want to have as little expenses as possible so that the foundation benefits," she said.
Premier Soccer League (PSL) chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele said the top flight has been informed about the tourney and have given the organisers the go ahead to stage the event.
"We have been told that teams in the PSL will be taking part in the tournament and we have given them the go ahead. It's a pre-season tourney so it does not affect us in any way, in-fact it helps as it contributes to the development of players before the start of the season," he said.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) southern region vice chairman, Francis Ntuta acknowledged the matches would take place this weekend.
Highlanders beat FC Platinum 1-0 in a pre-season friendly at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo last Sunday.
Highlanders chairman Peter Dube said the Bulawayo giants would be taking the match against Chapungu as a preparatory game for the upcoming PSL season.
"We will be using this match to prepare for the forthcoming season. We will use it to mould our team, hence we are taking it seriously," said Dube.
The tournament was initially slated for 8-9 February, but was postponed to this weekend as Mandava and Ascot stadiums were waterlogged due to incessant rains.
