Yet another exhilarating Bulawayo derby is in the offing as perennial rivals Highlanders and Premiership returnees Zimbabwe Saints lock horns at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.

The first "turbulent" City of Kings and Queens derby involved Highlanders and newcomers Chicken Inn at Luveve Stadium three weeks back which saw the former champions winning 2-1.

In the last league match in August 2006, Zimbabwe Saints were on the receiving end losing 1-0 to Bosso in the second half of the season after having succumbed to a 3-1 defeat in the first half.

Highlanders went on to win the championship under the tutelage of Methembe Ndlovu while Chikwata flirted with the country's most elite football league for the last time until their return this year.

Chauya Chikwata was coached by Anderson Phiri and boasted players like Maxwell Mburayi, Petros Patsime, Tendai Mkaira, Sidney Mkaira, Themba Ndlovu, Peace Tshuma, Mthokozisi Nkomo and current Shooting Stars goalkeeper, Pedzisai Gumiremhete.

Bosso starred with the likes of colourful, stylish and charismatic Warriors and South African Absa Premiership side Platinum Stars goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini and Inland Stream First National Division Witbank Spurs' Ralph Matema.

The team also had the Belgium-based pair of Warriors left-back Vusa Nyoni and Honour Gombami and Obadiah Tarumbwa who plays for Enosis Paralimni in Cyprus.

In 2004 when Zimbabwe Saints were relegated once more they fell to Highlanders 2-1 in May and 2-0 in November.

Two years before that Chikwata lost 2-1 to Bosso before drawing 1-1 in September. After 2000, Zimbabwe Saints only beat Highlanders 2-1 in July 2001 in a league match.

Zimbabwe Saints were arguably one of the best teams in Zimbabwe in the 1980s and 1990s and they won the championship in 1988 after playing an unbeaten 23 matches under coach Roy Baretto.

Chikwata was home to former greats like the late Joseph Machingura, current assistant coach Agent Sawu, Muzondiwa Mugadza, John Sibanda, Ronald Sibanda, Henry McKop, Ephraim Chawanda and former Zifa technical director Gibson Homela.

Bosso greats include Black Mambas technical director Madinda Ndlovu, his brothers iconic Peter and Adam, Chikwata head coach Willard Mashinkila-Khumalo, the late Melusi Nkiwane, Benjamin "Makanakky" Nkonjera, Mercedes Sibanda, Titus Majola and Alexander Maseko among others.

Highlanders and Zimbabwe Saints clashes have always produced the exuberant characteristics of local derbies.
