The first round of the BMX National Championships will be held in Bulawayo on January 15 and 16 at Busters BMX Track.
Chairman of the National BMX Association Andrew Donaldson on Sunday confirmed that the competition was on and said 60 riders were expected to take part.
From the City of Kings and Queens, 20 riders are expected to participate in the tournament that will also feature two young champions Tyla-Shae Donaldson (9) and Tayne Turnock (10).
Also taking part will be 12 World Plate holders who rode in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, last July.
"The competition will actually be held on January 15 and 16 and 60 riders are expected to take part. We have two world champions Tyla-Shae Donaldson and Tyane Turnock. Along there will be 12 World Plate holders who participated in Pietermaritzburg in July last year. It will be the first leg of the national championships to be held in Bulawayo," Donaldson said.
The second round of the national championships will be held in Gweru in early May, while the third and final leg will be in Harare in September.
After the weekend competition, Donaldson said they would be naming the Zimbabwe team that would take part in the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, in July.
Matabeleland BMX Association committee member Norman Bourne said although the track was waterlogged at the moment, he hoped that by the weekend everything would be in perfect order.
"The track at the moment is waterlogged. It should be okay by weekend. The guys are working flat out on the track," Bourne said.
