Zimbabwe Republic Police have heightened security in Bulawayo ahead of an epic clash pitting bitter rivals Highlanders and Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.
Early this week, Dynamos president Kenny Mubaiwa wrote to the Premier Soccer League threatening not to fulfil the much anticipated encounter if there are no security guarantees for his team.
That prompted Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango to say police will not tolerate any uncouth behaviour in and around the stadium.
She said "Our message has always been clear that we don't tolerate violence. Would-be offenders are warned against causing chaos in and outside the stadium as we'll be there in full force. We want people to enjoy football and head back to their respective places without any disturbance."
However, there is heavy police presence in the city with speculation rife that police are taking no chances.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that police have sought water cannons reinforcements from Harare.
Police are visible at almost every intersection within the central business district.
In the corresponding fixture last year, a Highlanders supporter Thembelenkosi Hloli (24) who was popularly known as Thembinator, was killed at the Renkini long-distance bus terminus after he was chased down by Dynamos supporters driving a Toyota Noah.
Repeated efforts to get comment from Simango where fruitless this morning as the police Public relations department phones went unanswered.
