Easycall Cup explodes

The NetOne Easycall Cup commences today with two mouth-watering quarter-final clashes pitting CAPS United against Hwange while ZPC Kariba take on Chicken Inn.

The competition features the top eight teams from last season and it presents Makepekepe with a chance to win some silverware this year.

In their last league meeting in September, Makepekepe triumphed over the coalminers 1-0 at the Colliery.

With Lloyd Chitembwe's side already out of reckoning for the league title, winning the NetOne Easycall Cup means they will not finish the season empty-handed.

"We haven't achieved anything, so we can't talk about complacency….and this should motivate us to do what is supposed to be done," said Chitembwe on Thursday.

United's performances have, however, been inspiring as reflected by their display against Dynamos last Sunday.

"We are hoping to build a culture of winning at United and this tournament should be the turning point," he said.

The former hard-tackling United midfielder predicted a cagey affair against the coal miners.

"It's going to be difficult, there are no easy games in football, after all they are being coached by one of the national team coaches but we expect to be competitive and very professional in the way we apply ourselves. It's our goal to progress to the next round," he said.

Makepekepe assistant coach Mark Mathe warned his charges to be mentally prepared.

"We have been telling our players to take penalty shoot-out practise sessions seriously because at the end of the day it could decide the game."

Whilst United battle it out with Hwange, it will be another intriguing contest between ZPC Kariba and Chicken Inn at Nyamhunga Stadium.

The Gamecocks are on course to win the league title and if they triumph in this competition it means they will be celebrating a double at the end of the year.

Chicken Inn coach Joey Antipas said: "Our preparations have been okay, we have got a full squad to choose from with no injuries and everyone will be ready come Saturday (today).

"We just have to continue working hard. It's going to be a difficult game against ZPC Kariba and we need to put maximum effort.

"We have to approach this game cautiously. You know cup games are different, if you win you progress and if you lose you are out and there is no small team in Cup games."

Tomorrow, Dynamos take on How Mine at Rufaro Stadium while FC Platinum host Highlanders at Mandava Stadium.
