HIGHLANDERS Football Club has opened its nomination process for the election of an executive vice-chairman and treasurer, with Saturday January 23 being the closing date for submission of nomination forms. The elections will be held a week after the club's annual general meeting, which some members have over the years dubbed a mere talk show as most resolutions passed are hardly implemented.

They said it was common for members to argue on a motion until the moderator decides to move to the next point on the agenda with no consensus on the previous one. However, hopes are high that the forthcoming annual general meeting will be fruitful.

Focus though is on the elections, which will be held a week after the meeting. Harare-based Mgcini Sibhalo Mpofu is the incumbent executive vice-chairman while Bulawayo businessman Donald Ndebele holds the treasurer's post, having been co-opted last year following the resignation of Jerry Sibanda.

Sibanda was recalled by his employers, Bulawayo City Council, to chair their football team, Bulawayo City, which was then plying its trade in the Zifa Southern Region League. Sibanda led the team to the elite Premier Soccer League.

With the opening of the nomination process, the usual Highlanders election atmosphere will soon be felt across the city and beyond, as candidates jostle for recognition.

In a notice yesterday, Highlanders' secretary-general Emmet Ndlovu said in conformity with provisions of the club's constitution, elections for the office bearers will be conducted separately from the AGM business, on February 7, 2016, at 10AM at the Highlanders' Sports Club.

"Aspiring candidates must obtain appropriate nomination forms from the club office, 50 Robert Mugabe Way, Bulawayo, for which a refundable fee of $100 is payable should a candidate poll in excess of 10 percent of total votes cast. Closing date for submission of the completed forms will be Saturday, January 23, 2016, at 12 noon," reads the notice signed by Ndlovu.

The incumbents, Mpofu and Ndebele, are likely to seek new terms in office, although the Harare Supporters' Chapter leader Morden Ngwenya could challenge Mpofu.
