In a surprise turn of events, Highlanders chairman Peter Dube has taken over as the Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman.

According to Standardsport, Dube took over from CAPS United president Twine Phiri, whose position or decision to leave the league's top post has not yet been explained.

Zifa released a statement late last night announcing that Dube had taken over as the PSL chairman on acting basis.

"Zifa would like to inform the football fraternity that Peter Dube is the acting chairman of the PSL until further notice. Further details regarding the chairmanship will be made public in due course," read the statement.

Contacted for comment, Zifa president Phillip Chiyangwa said the move to relieve Phiri of the PSL top job was long overdue.

"Actually, Twine should have ceased being PSL chairman long back when his mandate was revoked. After Friday's meeting with clubs, we then realised that clubs cannot continue to be chaired by someone who was doing it illegally," Chiyangwa said.

PSL and other sporting associations that have seats in the Zifa board have been ordered by Zifa to hold elections as soon as possible to put their structures in place so that those in power can be accommodated in the new board.
