A PANEL of experts convened in Harare yesterday to select the 11 finalists for the Soccer Star of the Year awards who have been outstanding during the just-ended Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
There were not many surprises in the final 11. Twelve (12) players including Golden Boot winner Rodreck Mutuma (Dynamos) and Evans Gwekwerere were disqualified beforehand for picking more than six yellow cards.
Last year's Footballer of the Year, Charles Sibanda, was disqualified for improper conduct after he was fined by the Premier League for dousing Chicken Innn coach Adam Ndlovu with urine during their ill-tampered match at Luveve.
Premier League champions Dynamos, runners-up FC Platinum and Highlanders contributed two players each, while Hwange, Gunners, CAPS United, Black Mambas and Motor Action contributed a player each.
The selectors – who for the first time included the Premier League coaches – met at the Mandel Training Centre in Marlborough to pick the country's best players for the 2011 season.
They also picked the Coach of the Year and Referee of the Year but these will not be known until the December 9 banquet in Harare where the Footballer of the Year will also be revealed.
This year the selectors also picked three players for Young Promising Player: Morris Kadzola (Chicken Inn), Denver Mukamba (Dynamos) and Cliff Sekete (Gunners).
Hwange were named the Most Disciplined Team for 2011.
Footballer of the Year Finalists
Washington Arubi, George Magariro (Dynamos), Graham Ncube, Rahman Kutsanzira (Highlanders), Tafadzwa Dube, Donald Ngoma (FC Platinum), Abbas Amidu (Black Mambas), Cliff Sekete (Gunners), Nkosana Siwela (Hwange), Tapiwa Kumbuyani (CAPS United), Allen Gahadzikwa (Motor Action)
