Harare team in their colours and medals
The recently held National Darts Association Open Easter tournament lived to its billing to one of the most contested, record breaking darts event to be witnessed in many years to come.Coinciding with the Heroes celebrations, the darts extravaganza showed that Harare is the home of darts. Harare provincial teams fortified/asserted themselves among the 15 fifteen provinces that attended the event.
Last year in August in Gweru the province dominated the event almost eclipsing the event. This year event held in Marondera saw 15 provinces with ladies and men darts teams fighting for honours in team, open and closed events. Harare had two men and two ladies teams.
In the ladies category both the ladies teams went up to the finals of the team event with team ‘B' winning the berth to contest the final event against Midlands. The battle between Midlands and Harare was settled with a tie-breaker as the teams were 8-8 apiece after the final game. Midlands prevailed clinching the ladies gold team event Harare team ‘B' runners up and team ‘A' on third position.
Harare darts players featured in all the events finals both in the men and ladies categories. Ladies open doubles event had Cecilia Nzonzo and Chapu Yvette settling for silver and Christabel Mupfure and Faith Dube settling for the third place.
In the ladies Closed doubles Charity Masuka and Svodai Nyika got silver whilst the pair of Cecilia Nzonzo and Chapu Yvette settled for bronze. The ladies Open single was claimed by Sibongile Kagodora dispatching the much fancied Melody Gezani who has been in the game long enough. Kagodora showed no respect for the veteran and emerged the victor.
FINAL TABLE
In the ladies closed singles Svodai Nyika failed to raise to the occasion succumbing to the Svavisai of Midlands, Christabel Mupfure of Harare settled for bronze.
The same scenario prevailed in the men category as Harare men went toe to toe with the veterans in the game. In the Open doubles the pair of Daniel Mavhura and Felix Mauye emerged victors against the Manicaland duo of Salesio Gunda and Caleb Sigauke.
In the Open singles event Felix Mauye of Harare fell to the slayings of David Nyemba who has seen it all in the game of darts. It is unfortunate that David Nyemba had not had any chances of participating in international events like the Professional Darts Corporation events.
In the Closed singles Modekai Dheka could not match the power of Salesio Gunda as he settled for silver.
Harare hauled 12 medals in the process,3 gold,6 silver and 3 bronze medals in total with Manicaland a distant 6 and midlands on third with 5 medals other provinces got 1 each. Harare the invincibles!!!
