England have been dumped out of the Rugby World Cup after losing 33-13 at Twickenham on Saturday evening.
England trailed 17-3 at the break but buoyed by passionate home support launched a stunning comeback which would ultimately fall well short.
Wallabies flyhalf Bernard Foley scored all of his side's points in the first half including converting two of his own tries and adding one penalty.
England's Owen Farrell replied with one penalty as a packed Twickenham crowd were stunned into silence at the break.
Foley was it again early in the second half as he added another penalty to take Australia and his tally to 20 points.
England wing Anthony Watson gave the crowd a much needed lift when he crashed over the line in the 55th minute and when Farrell converted to the corner, Australia's lead was cut to just 10 points with just over 20 minutes to play.
Australia's defence continued to stand up to the attacks that followed as the home crowd continued to urge their side on.
Michael Hooper and David Pocock were in fine form and thwarted numerous attacks by England with some brilliant play at ruck time.
Foley and Farrell traded penalties which meant England were seven points behind with 12 minutes left to play.
Crucially, Farrell was deemed to have tackled Foley without the ball and was sin binned with 10 minutes left to play. Foley gathered himself from the hit to send the Wallabies further in front.
Foley made England pay with yet another penalty and at the same time ended the contest with a 75th minute penalty after the Wallabies scrum destroyed their English counterparts.
Matt Giteau put the icing on the cake with a try in the 79th minute which Foley converted from the corner.
