Ian St John believes wantaway Fernando Torres should consider a rethink on his planned move to Chelsea, because they are on their way down.
Liverpool rejected a £35million bid from the West Londoners earlier this week and are braced for a renewed, which could see Daniel Sturridge heading to Anfield, before the transfer window closes on Monday after the Spain international submitted a written transfer request.
Although the request was turned down by the club, Torres appears determined to bring his three-and-a-half year spell on Merseyside to an end in order to join Chelsea.
But Kop legend St John, 72, has urged the striker to consider an alternative destination should he continue with his plans to leave Liverpool.
"Maybe [Torres] should think again about Chelsea, because they are a club that are not on the up," St John told Radio City Sport.
"They're old players who have had their day and won their titles, but are on their way back down again and will be overtaken by other teams."
St John, a mainstay of Bill Shankly's side throughout the 1960's, amidst that he is also unsurprised by Torres' inconsistent form throughout the current campaign and claims that he has the return of Kenny Dalglish as manager to thank for a recent upturn.
He said: "Apart from the last couple of weeks since Kenny got in the hot seat, he's been playing terrible all season.
"Everyone's putting it down to the World Cup, injuries, this that and the other, but we don't know.
"Maybe he's saying he wants away from here so he's not bothered and that was the way he was playing right up until Kenny came in and then there was a little bit of an injection into his game.
"So it's no surprise in a way that he's looking to get away. But the fact that he's said that he wants to go to another Premier League team was a shock for me."
Chelsea, meanwhile, are keeping tight-lipped on plans to bring Torres to Stamford Bridge with manager Carlo Ancelotti giving little away when he spoke after this afternoon's FA Cup fourth round draw with Everton.
