Sunday Chidzambwa threatens to quit ZPC Kariba

ZPC Kariba coach Sunday "Mhofu" Chidzambwa has threatened to quit if his players do not show more zeal to win games.

Mhofu was left furious after his charges lost 1-0 to CAPS United at National Sports Stadium yesterday.

The champions had become the punching bag in the past weeks but yesterday ZPC Kariba gave them a respite.

It all came on a day Dominic Chungwa also finally remembered how to score and he did it in style.

"I mean if players do not want to play football, they might as well forget about winning anything.

"At the same time they will put pressure on the coach and if players are not prepared to fight for a game of football, I think I'm prepared to kiss it goodbye," Mhofu said.

He added: "My team started to fight when we were one goal down. You don't expect to win. We have to go back and look at ourselves in the mirror, tell ourselves the truth, whether we want to play or not.

"I'm saying if players are not prepared to fight, I would rather go and stay at home rather than getting pressure everyday when you do not have players who do not want to fight for the game.

"Our problem is that we are not fighting and if you do not fight, you do not win games. I'm going to talk to the players. If they do not want to fight, I might as well resign. This is what I'm saying."

CAPS United showed they wanted to win from the onset.

"Look at CAPS. You can count on two, three players but everyone was fighting. They wanted to win.

They were chasing for any ball be it defensive or offensive. They were chasing for any ball. Ours, too nice," the ZPC Kariba coach said.

Asked if he had no other players in the squad that could give him what he wants, Mhofu said: "We have very good players and the only thing we need to do is to fight. We had some new youngsters in there but we still do not fight. As a result I get the blame when we don't get results. I get fired. I'm going to talk to them. Maybe they want someone they can fight for.

"Congratulations to CAPS United for the way they fought. They fought from the word go upto the final whistle. That is how a team wins points."

After the game CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe, who has been under a lot of pressure in the past weeks, did not come for the post match interviews.

Instead, he delegated assistant coach Fungai Kwashi.

"They fought brilliantly today. They gave everything for the football club. We deserved to win the game according to the statistics. We created most of the chances. It was only a matter of time before we got the break," Kwashi said.

"Well done to Dominic Chungwa for that brilliant strike. We are happy. The feeling is good but in football sometimes you have to go through a bad patch. The reward for good work is more work. That reward for good work means we have to work. That is part of football.

"We remain United and we do not want to give ourselves unnecessary pressure. We will not get carried away after this win," he said.

CAPS United moved to 17 points after yesterday's result while ZPC Kariba remain stuck on 29.
In other matches played yesterday, Highlanders were held to a goalless draw by Harare City at Barbourfields, Hwange floored Chapungu 2-0 at the Colliery while Triangle edged Bantu Rovers 1-0 at Gibbo.
