BETHEL Secondary School defender, Samukeliso Nare, became the first recipient of the Sylvia Dube women's football scholarship targeted underprivileged girls. Nare, who had been struggling to pay school fees, caught the eye of the selectors at the Matabeleland South Girls Soccer tournament, staged in Gwanda last month.
The 19year old is in Form Three and received school fees, textbooks, exercise books and a set of school uniforms.
The scholarship is a brainchild of Zifa president, Cuthbert Dube, and the donation came through Buymore Investments. Wavell Gunda, a representative of Buymore, handed over the sponsorship package to Nare at her school in Thuli last Friday.
"This scholarship came through after the launch of the Sylvia Dube women's football tournament and is geared to reward football excellence as well as academic excellence. Under this scholarship, we will provide school fees, books, uniforms and we hope to find attachment for the student so that she gets formal employment later on," said Gunda.
Nare said she will try to work hard and hopes to play for Mighty Warriors in future.
