FC Platinum 1 - 1 CAPS United
(CAPS won 5-4 on penalties)
CAPS United stormed into the final of the NetOne Charity Shield after outpointing FC Platinum in the sudden death of penalty shoot-outs in a thrilling semi-final at Mandava Stadium yesterday.

Makepekepe  goalkeeper, Winston Chiwetu, was the hero for the Harare side when he saved two penalties before scoring the winning spot kick by sending FC Platinum keeper, Petros Mhari, the wrong way and jerking the visiting fans into delirium.

The teams had gone into the sudden death tied at 3-3 but it needed four more penalties to settle the pulsating tie.

Impressive winger, Hardlife Zvirekwi, Moses Muchenje, Ronald Pfumbidzai, Arnold Chiveya and Chiwetu were on target for Caps United whilst Tendai Samanja, Tawanda Nyamandwe, Takudzwa Mahori and Blessing Zabula missed their kicks.

Substitute Joel Ngodzo missed FC Platinum's opening kick but Winston Mhango and skipper Daniel Veremu scored to level the scores at 2-2 after Zvirekwi and Muchenje had netted for Caps United.

Man of the match, Donald "Dombo" Ngoma, Nelson Maziwisa,  Ian Nekate and Kelvin Moyo missed FC Platinum's kicks while Thabani Kamusoko and Ali Sadiki were on target for the platinum miners.

The young Moyo's missed ninth penalty-kick set the stage for young Caps United keeper, Chiwetu who held his nerve to send Mhari the wrong direction and silence the FC Platinum supporters who were packed in the Chibouk-end stand.

FC Platinum had started the match strongly and quickly got a goal in the third minute when Kamusoko curled in a beautiful free kick after Ngoma had been fouled just outside the box.

The goal came after Ngoma hit the upright post after only 42 seconds and the fans were already preparing for a Caps United massacre.

An experienced yet youthful Makepekepe side however settled and found the equalizer in the 19th minute when Nyamandwe headed home a rebound from Mhari.

The Green Machine temporarily seized control of the match with Joseph Mutambiranwa getting the better of Welcome Ndiweni in the central midfield battle.

Ndiweni was hauled off in the 28th minute, making way for Nekate who went on to occupy the right back position with Mhango moving into central midfield in a tactical move.

The dreadlocked Charles Sibanda could have given FC Platinum the lead in the 40th minute but he mysteriously skied his effort with a yawning goal in front of him.

Action swung from one end to the other in the second half as the tempo upped especially after the introduction of Ngodzo and the exciting Mahori for FC Platinum and Caps United respectively.

Caps United were denied what seemed like a genuine penalty when Moyo appeared to have handled when he blocked a Zvirekwi goal bound strike in the 68th minute.

This was one of the many questionable decisions made by referee, Pilani Ncube who seemed to spoil an otherwise pulsating encounter.

The whistleman also missed a glaring Tapiwa Kumbuyani handball in the box during the first period and flashed unwarranted yellow cards to Caps United players.

The tireless Sadiki had his goal disallowed for off side in the 71st minute as FC Platinum mounted a late surge for the winner but United held on to force the match into penalties.

Caps United coach, Brenna Msiska was ecstatic after the match and praised his young players for putting on a brave show.

"The youngsters surprised me indeed. They are maturing by each day and I am glad to say that we are moving in the right direction. Hopefully we will win the cup," he said.

FC Platinum coach, Tenant Chilumba, was diplomatic in accepting defeat and wished Makepekepe well in today's final.

"We dominated the match but failed to convert our chances. Such is the nature of the game and I would like to congratulate Caps United for beating us today," said Chilumba.
