IT HAS been a long time coming, but Kaizer Chiefs finally managed to register their first home victory against SuperSport United with a 2-0 win last night.
Knowledge Musona and Reneilwe "Yeye" Letsholonyane were the chief destroyers as their goals threw Amakhosi right back into the title race.
Musona opened the scoring after a great pass from Siphiwe Tshabalala on the 15th minute. The goal, his first since the 2-all draw against Santos in February, once again made him joint top goalscorer with Mamelodi Sundowns' Katlego Mphela with 12 goals apiece.
Letsholonyane, who showed great commitment and never stopped running for the duration of the match, grabbed the second that put the match beyond doubt three minutes from the whistle.
In all fairness, the match failed to live up to expectations but Chiefs, who still have an outside chance of winning the league, will not be too bothered as they managed to achieve what they set out to achieve - getting three points.
Chiefs will go into Saturday's match against Mpumalanga Black Aces in Polokwane with their tails high.
The home side created chances early on in the match, and Musona had his call for a penalty turned down after he was body-checked on the 9th minute.
But Matsatsantsa a Pitori were not sitting back, and three minutes after Chiefs had taken the lead, Itumeleng Khune was called to make a spectacular save from Fikru Lemessa.
Khune once again denied Glen Salmon on the 21st minute. But with United pushing forward, they ran a risk of being exposed at the back, and Chiefs nearly scored 10 minutes after the interval.
In almost the same manner that the first goal was scored, Musona played Sthembiso Ngcobo through, but the latter shot over the bar.
Although both teams did not create enough good chances, United had more possession, which they failed to use.
That would be their downfall as Abia Nale, who had come on for Ngcobo, burst down the left and sent in a good pass for Letsholonyane to score.
Apart from the goals, the other interesting thing was the Chiefs supporters giving United's Liberian striker Anthony Laffor a standing ovation when he was substituted in the 70th minute.
