Zimbabwe's Young Warriors drew 2all with Botswana in the All Africa Games Under 23 qualifier that was played in Gaborone on Friday.
Zimbabwe's goals came from Simbarashe Sithole in the 30th minute and Denver Mukamba, two minutes after half time.
The second leg of the qualifiers will be held at Rufaro Stadium in Harare in two weeks time.
The Young Warriors, with home support, will now be hoping to finish off Botswana in the return leg.
