A last minute header from Grant Lungu sent Mhofu's Black Leopards through to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, beating Premiership campaigners Vasco da Gama 3-2 after extra-time in a five-goal thriller at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane South Africa on Saturday.
Vasco had taken the lead courtesy of Zeka Karkee with a sublime shot outside the box in the 39th minute before the striker came back to net an important brace in the 90th minute when he headed in an equaliser that forced extra-time.
Leopards's first two goals came courtesy of own goals with them first levelling matters three minutes after Vasco went 1-0 up, with an own-goal from midfielder Aiken Jenniker in the 42nd minute.
Mhofu's outfit went into lead for the first time in the match through a deflection from Vasco defender Mokete Tsotetsi in the 85th minute from midfielder Mongezi Bobe's shot.
Mhofu's Lidoda Duvha is the only First Division outfit still remaining in the competition, and became the second side in as many weeks to beat the Capetonian charges 3-2, having came from behind after Moroka Swallows performed the same feat in the league at Dobsonville Stadium last Saturday.
While both sides were evenly matched, it was Leopards and their enterprising build-ups that prevailed to Vasco's direct approach style of play, and created more chances at goal in the encounter.
Leopards had Robert Monama dictating matters from midfield, and came close to handing his team a win in normal time when he fired a shot narrowly wide of goal just before the hour mark.
For Vasco, their talisman in their inaugural season in the Premiership has been former Bafana Bafana player forward Sibusiso Zuma who, again, was at the heart of the team's best offensive efforts.
In the first-half of extra-time, Jennicker had an opportunity of avenging his earlier own goal but fired his shot wide after being well set up by Zuma shortly before the interval.
Leopards, a former elite division team, are now a win away from competing in the final that carries a R6 Million prize for the winners.
