Bafana Bafana continued their steady rise on the FIFA World Rankings list released on Wednesday.
South Africa is now fourth on the continent – swopping places with Nigeria who fall to fifth place.
Bafana Bafana are ranked 38th in the world, moving just one spot from the 39th position they occupied last month.
Ghana, Ivory Coast and African Champions Egypt retained the top three positions, with Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Libya completing the top ten in Africa.
In their last seven matches, South Africa won five of them, lost one (against USA) and drew the other one. They registered a one-nil victory against Tanzania in a friendly international played on Saturday Dar-es-Salaam.
South Africa next plays Egypt in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Cairo on Sunday, June 5.
Bafana Bafana have now risen 48 places since head coach Pitso Mosimane took over the reigns from Carlos Alberto Parreira just after the 2010 World Cup finals.
"We have a good team, and there is a good vibe in the camp, hence the positive results," said Mosimane.
"We are working very hard to get to the very top, but we remember that the more we progress the more the pressure and expectations."
Africa's Top Ten (global ranking in brackets): 1. Ghana (15), 2. Ivory Coast (21), 3. Egypt (36), 4. South Africa (38), 5. Nigeria (39), 6. Senegal (40), 7. Algeria (41), 8. Burkina Faso (44), 9. Cameroon (49), 10. Libya (58).
There were no changes at the top of the World rankings with 2010 World Cup finalists, Spain and Netherlands, still holding first and second positions.
Brazil remains third, followed by Germany and Argentina in the top five.
England, Uruguay, Portugal, Italy and Croatia make up the top ten.
