BAFANA Bafana coach Gordon Igesund is expected to be fired after next week's Safa National Executive Committee meeting, the Daily Sun reported on Sunday.
Under Igesund, Bafana bombed out of the Chan tournament in humiliating fashion, triggering vociferous calls from members of the public to be sacked.
To exacerbate the situation, Safa officials allege that Igesund influenced players to strike for bonuses before the opening match against Mozambique. The public was joined by Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula, who called the national team a bunch of losers. It's believed that four senior players gave Mbalula a lowdown of what has been happening in the team's camp and the minister will take the matter up with Safa. "The association takes the allegations in a serious light and we will go to any length to get to the bottom of it. We can't have a situation where one man can hold the association to ransom," said one executive member. Safa president Danny Jordaan yesterday said they were still awaiting reports from the team manager, the head of delegation and the technical team. Paena Galane, Mbalula's spokesman said the minister was aware of the allegations against the coach.
A peeved Igesund yesterday dismissed the allegations as a smear campaign.
