The national football team, the Warriors have regressed on the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings released Thursday, falling to 99th to complete a miserable week for Zimbabwe, who crashed out of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers in the preliminary round last Sunday.
The Warriors, who have had a terrible few weeks during which they fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on May 18, before last Sunday's disappointing 2-2 home draw with the same team, paid the prize for the first leg defeat, dropping one place on the world rankings. The Warrors are 26th on the continent.
The Warriors' conquerors in the Afcon 2015 qualifiers, Tanzania, were among the big movers in the latest rankings, rising nine places to 113th in the world and 32nd in Africa.
Given that the Warriors will not be participating in competitive matches until the qualifiers for the 2016 Africa Nations Championship (Chan) and 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, as well as 2018 World Cup begin, they are likely to drop out of the top 100, making it even more difficult for the country's promising players to break into the top European leagues.
