RIO DE JANEIRO - Former Corinthians manager Tite has emerged as the favorite to succeed Luiz Felipe Scolari as coach of Brazil after the World Cup.

Scolari is widely tipped to step down following Brazil's clash with the Netherlands for third place in Brasilia on Saturday.

Other candidates mooted for the role are Sao Paulo coach Muricy Ramalho and former Brazil and Real Madrid boss Vanderlei Luxemburgo.

Tite led Corinthians to the Copa Libertadores-FIFA Club World Cup double in 2012. The 53-year-old has been out of work since leaving Corinthians in December 2013.

It is understood Scolari told friends and family of his intention to resign following the Selecao's 7-1 semifinal defeat to Germany on Tuesday.

Scolari guided Brazil to victory at the 2002 World Cup during his first spell as national coach.

Meanwhile there are reports that Scolari on Wednesday refused to quit following his side's crushing 7-1 defeat to Germany.

Scolari held up a sheet of paper detailing Brazil's record since he took over at the end of 2012.

In 28 matches the Selecao have won 19, drawn six and lost three. In 11 competitive fixtures they have lost just once - the defeat to Germany on Tuesday - winning eight times and drawing the other two games.

Last summer Brazil comfortably won the Confederations Cup on home soil under Scolari, beating Spain 3-0 in the final.
