Hwange 2 - 1 Caps United
CAPS United blew a golden chance to take leadership of the Castle Lager Premiership race after succumbing to a painful, if not controversial, defeat in this incident-filled tie at the Colliery.
Two players were expelled and two officials were also sent off as the game degenerated into chaotic scenes which saw players, the police and officials plunging into wrestling contests. Tempers started flaring as early as early the 30th minute when referee Bonamali Bwanale awarded the hosts a penalty, judging that Asani Nhongo had tripped Hwange midfielder Farai Vimisai.
The incident was spotted by second assistant referee Venaldo Zulu, which incensed the CAPS players and technical bench, who argued that the incident had happened outside the penalty area.
Hwange goalkeeper Takabva Mawaya sent his opposite number Tafadzwa Dube the wrong way.
Makepekepe assistant coaches Mike Madzivanyika and Richard Tswatswa were sent to the terraces. The hosts doubled their advantage in the 19th minute courtesy of Alec Marime.
CAPS were awarded a penalty after Hwange defender Tonisani Sibelo was adjudged to have fouled Nicholas Alifandika and Honey Chimutimunzeve converted from the spot.
Then came the lengthy 10-minute stoppage, at the beginning of the second half, when eight CAPS players - Dube, Alifandika, Tendai Samanja, Tapiwa Khumbuyani, Dominic Mukandi, George Nyirenda and Stephen Makatuka and Chimutimunzeve - were shown yellow cards for scaling the security fence to use an undesignated entry point from the break.
Chimutimunzeve, having been shown a yellow card earlier, was then sent off.
Deep into injury time, Marime was also shown the red card by Bwanali for insulting the CAPS United substitutes.
CAPS United gaffer Taurai Mangwiro was seething with fury at the end of the match and said the trip to Hwange was a waste of time.
"You can write what you saw, but in all fairness there was no point of coming here judging by what happened," said an emotional Mangwiro.
