Premiership side Buffaloes have engaged nomadic gaffer Moses 'Bambo' Chunga as their head coach, replacing Luke 'Vahombe' Masomere, who quit the club earlier this week to take up a similar role at Bulawayo outfit How Mine.
Although officials at the army side refused to shed light on the development, highly placed sources in the club's administration confirmed that Chunga will be signing a contract soon and begin working towards securing the club's status as a top flight league club.
The financially troubled Mutare side are currently eighth on the16-team Castle Lager Premier Soccer League log table with 29 points from 21 games.
Although Buffaloes sit four points clear of the relegation zone, the manner in which they have been playing in recent weeks gave signs of a struggling team which, if there are no improvements, will be relegation candidates.
"We are certainly appointing Moses Chunga. That is the actual position we came up with as an executive and everything will be clear when we meet him later today (yesterday) since he is on his way from Harare,'' said a source who declined to be named.
"Masomere's behaviour was now questionable to us and it was clear that he was no longer interested in the Buffaloes job. However, we will remain focused on improving the team's fortunes and we unanimously concluded that Chunga was the right man," added another source.
Later yesterday, Buffaloes chairman Hlanganiso Matangaidze sought to play down Chunga's imminent arrival at the club, insisting the club executive would only make a final decision on the head coach vacancy yesterday evening.
"We are going to finalise on the issue of our new head coach today (yesterday) in the evening and we will give you the details if we have finalised everything," he said.
If Chunga's appointment is confirmed, his first assignment as Buffaloes coach will be a league clash against Triangle United at Sakubva Stadium in Mutare.
