REIGNING Soccer Star of the Year Dennis Dauda might start the 2015 season with a new nickname "The Undertaker" after pictures of him with the trophy on his mother's grave went viral. ZRP rock solid defender, Dauda took the trophy which is property of the league, to pay homage to his mother who passed away during the last quarter of the 2014 season.
The last phase of the season was an emotional ride for him, and when he won the Soccer Star of the Year gong, he publicly dedicated it to his mother.
Taking the trophy to her grave was somewhat a way of paying tribute to his departed queen, but the Premier Soccer League finds the move strange.
"There is a mixture of societal beliefs, tradition and the respect of the trophy. We are hearing it for the first time and it's a sensitive issue. The silverware is the property of the league," PSL CEO Kennedy Ndebele said.
In the picture Dauda is spotting a rosary and his trademark funky hairstyle. The prestigious Soccer Stars accolade is on top of his mother's grave.
He is in the company of two female senior citizens and a young boy. The gifted player is holding a two litre soft drink bottle on his right hand and a glass on the other hand. The picture was taken at Msasa Cemetery in Kwekwe, Dauda's hometown.
From the archives, and in another stunner, the late former Highlanders and Warriors rock solid defender Mercedes "Rambo" Sibanda in a legendary tale is said to have gone around Bulawayo drinking alcohol from the 1986 Soccer Star of the Year trophy.
Meanwhile, ZPC Kariba have said they did not bless Dauda's recent trial stint at the Azerbaijani club. Late last week, the defender had his pictures in action at FC Gabala website training with the team at their mid-season winter break in Antalya, Turkey.
This pre-season, ZPC Kariba have already lost goalkeeper Tonderayi Mateyaunga and Obey Mwerahari to defending PSL champions Dynamos.
Late last week, veteran striker Limited Chikafa, a 2014 Soccer Stars of the Year second runner up signed for Luke Masomere's How Mine together with last year Soccer Star of the Year finalist Charles Sibanda who was formely with highlanders.
