Rufaro violence slammed

ZIFA has condemned missile-throwing incidents during the Bob91 Super Cup final between Dynamos and Caps United at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday afternoon. This was the second time Caps United supporters rained missiles after they also pelted Highlanders goal keeper Ariel Sibanda at BF last week.

The law will soon come hard on those caught instigating such incidents, said Zifa. The missiles came from both sets of fans as they vented their anger at the referee Nomore Musundire.

Ironically, the incident came moments after a group of fans clad in Dynamos and Caps United colours had held a demonstration in the capital denouncing violence that erupted at Barbourfields Stadium last week in a match featuring Highlanders and Caps United.

Some of the placards called for the banning of Barbourfields Stadium while others challenged both Zifa and the Premier Soccer League to come down hard on Highlanders.

"It's with a heavy heart that we speak again about the cancer that has since overtaken the sole purpose of football in the country.

"Last week the nation came to a standstill as a section of Highlanders fans attacked a Caps United supporter leaving him in a critical condition requiring medical attention and today we are talking about missiles thrown by some Caps United and Dynamos supporters at referee Nomore Musundire.

"Our stance as the motherbody hasn't changed and we do not condone violent tendencies being displayed by hooligans whose intention is to maim the image of football events organisers," Xolisani Gwesela, the Zifa spokesperson said in a statement flighted on their official website yesterday afternoon.

Gwesela urged football clubs to help the mother body and PSL in combating the proliferation of violence.

"At this juncture we urge all Premier League clubs to re-engage with their supporters since Zifa is going to make sure that they face the wrath of failing to control their followers," said Gwesela.

Despite condemnation from all circles and even attracting the attention of legislators who quizzed Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Andrew Langa regarding policy issues to curb violence at match venues, the perpetrators seem undeterred.
