Dejected Highlanders Football Club fans have called on coach Bongani Mafu to immediately resign from the team or they will beat him up if he remains at the club.
According to information leaked to Bulawayo24 news scores of Highlanders fans have been sending a WhatsApp message to the coach's personal phone demanding him to resign immediately before they beat him up for the club's poor performance. The threats follow the club's unexpected loss to struggling Hwahwa Prison FC in a premier league match played in Gweru over the weekend.
The sources claim that the message sent to Mafu originated from a WhatsApp page of Highlanders supporters believed to be administered by prominent radio personnel and politician Ezra Sibanda. Sibanda has himself openly expressed his unhappiness about Bongani Mafu heading the Bulawayo football giants' technical department.
The message sent out to the coach in part reads that Mafu must resign immediately as he has failed to live to the promise he made on taking over reigns at the club that he will turn it to it's old glories. The message laments at the once great club losing to lowly clubs like Hwahwa.
On open social media Facebook and Twitter Mafu suffered similar barrage yesterday as soon as results of the match between Highlanders and Hwahwa spread. Fans attacked the beleaguered coach openly on his Facebook page which forced him to immediately close off the Facebook page.
Some unprintable insults were thrown at the coach by the angry fans demanding him to resign immediately or face being pushed out of the club by the fans themselves.
First to go at the coach was Gwanda based activist Bekezela Maduma Fuzwayo who said the coach was a failed cause. Fuzwayo claimed that the coach was exposing to ridicule the section of supporters that has been asking fans to give the coach a chance.
"Awuzameki coach..... You have made fools of us who have been saying that you must be given a chance. You have failed and you can see it yourself just do the honourable thing resign and give others a chance," wrote Fuzwayo in fury.
Thandazani Sibanda warned the coach that he must not be on the team bench when Highlanders plays their next home game against Chicken Inn.
"Let me warn you Mafu we will be waiting for you in the game against Chicken Inn. You better not be there otherwise you will see what we will do to you. We give are giving you one day to resign and leave Highlanders," he wrote.
Comment could not be obtained from Mafu who was not answering his phone.
