TROUBLED Teko Modise's future at Orlando Pirates is hanging by a thread
The club suspended him with immediate effect yesterday.
Modise, the club announced, was suspended with full pay and benefits for going AWOL ahead of their Premiership game against Santos last weekend.
This was after Modise absconded from the camp on Friday soon after allegedly receiving a phone call from his wife telling him that thugs had broken into their house.
Subsequent to that, Modise asked Pirates to drop him off at his car at the team hotel, instead of asking the club's security to accompany him home.
The former darling of the Pirates faithful kept communicating with Pirates' technical staff until just after midnight, when his phone went off.
He arrived at their camp on Saturday, about five hours before the match, but the technical staff felt it would be unfair for them to allow him back.
There are allegations that Modise was unhappy after the team selection for the Santos game was announced on Friday, which saw him being relegated to the bench. But his agent Jazzman Mahlakgane denied this.
Pirates said yesterday that the club had set up an investigation into Modise's absence to get to the bottom of the robbery allegations.
"Teko Modise's absenteeism from camp ahead of a crucial game without leave or consent is of such a serious nature the management of Orlando Pirates Football Club is duty bound to investigate with a particular view to establish the facts and thereafter determine an appropriate course of action," said chairperson Irvin Khoza.
"The club policies are carefully and clearly laid out in the Orlando Pirates Football Club's Employee Handbook to provide guidance for players in case of doubt. Teko is a senior player, his conduct is not only under scrutiny, it is precedence-setting as well."
Modise could not be reached for comment but Mahlakgane said: "Teko will prepare a report for Pirates. I will also try to get the wife's medical report and see if they reported the matter to the police.
"I want this matter to be resolved as soon as possible so that Teko can continue playing soccer."
