Pasuwa demands $7,000 pay from Zifa

CONTRACT negotiations between the Zimbabwe Football Association and national team coach Kalisto Pasuwa seem to have hit a brick wall over the latter's salary demands.
Pasuwa is reportedly demanding a monthly salary of $7 000 while Zifa are offering him $3 000. The coach is also demanding other "incentives" for taking the team to the finals of the Chan tournament and upcoming Afcon tournament, and insiders at Zifa said the board felt his demands were on the high, and urged him to consider their offer.
Following a recent truce with Pasuwa after he was temporarily fired, Zifa had resolved to quickly offer the coach a contract but negotiations appear to be dragging with the issue of his monthly salary and tenure being some of the sticking points.
Sources at Zifa said Pasuwa wants $7 000 per month, an amount that was rejected as being too much by the Zifa board that met in Harare on Friday as they felt $3 000 was reasonable.
"Edzai Kasinauyo was tasked with handling the contract negotiations and reported to the executive committee meeting that the coach had demanded $7 000, plus other monetary rewards, but it was felt the amount is too much and the cash strapped association would not be able to meet the figure and a counter proposal of $3 000 was made. Kasinauyo was told to go and explain the situation to Pasuwa's representative, Gibson Mahachi and hopefully we could come to a conclusion before the national team departs for Rwanda," said the source.
Another sticking point seems to be the contract duration with Zifa seeking a performance-based agreement while Pasuwa wants a flat two-year deal.
According to earlier media reports Zifa wants Pasuwa's future to be determined by the 2017 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers and if he fails, that would be the end of his flirtation with the national team.
This means Pasuwa's time at the helm of the Warriors' hot seat could end in September when the national team makes its last trip to Guinea for the final match of the qualifiers.
Pasuwa's agent, Gibson Mahachi refused to divulge the sticking points to Sunday News but said they were continuing their talks with the country's football mother body.
"We are still negotiating and there are a whole lot of issues involved but I can't say the exact points we are continuing to talk about but we are making progress and I think we will continue to talk, maybe until Monday," he said.
Efforts to get a comment from Zifa were fruitless as Kasinauyo was not answering his mobile phone.
Pasuwa has all along been engaged without a contract and Zifa had promised to reach an agreement with the coach as a way of showing their commitment to having the former Dynamos gaffer stay on as national team coach after giving him the boot and recalling him 48 hours later. Back then, some of the sticking points were on the issue of monetary rewards and allowances ahead and during the Rwanda Chan tournament, sources said.
The Warriors are expected to leave for the African Nations Championships in Rwanda later this week. Zimbabwe are in Group D alongside Zambia, Mali and Uganda.
