Ndumiso Gumede departure divides Bosso

NDUMISO Gumede's imminent departure from the Highlanders chief executive's office has sharply divided the club's hierarchy, threatening to create two centres of power.
The veteran administrator is set to step down at the end of next month after the expiry of his contract, but some members of the board, especially the old guard, and one member of the executive, want him to stay on until the end of the year.
Sources said while the majority, including Gumede himself, feel it is time the respected administrator passed the baton to someone else, there were some that want him to remain at the helm of the club's secretariat.
"It's shocking really that we've people who still strongly advocate for the old guard in the club. It's an undeniable fact that Gumede has done his part and someone fresh must take over, but for reasons known to them, some board members still want him to hang on," said the source.
Young turks at Bosso, in both the executive and board, are all agreed that Gumede must be allowed to rest.
"It's the old guard that's trying to have the contract extended up to the end of the year, which really is a mystery because even the man himself has said it on numerous occasions that he wants to rest," said the source.
The source said the human resources committee has recommended that interviews be conducted for a new chief executive officer or alternatively the club headhunts for Gumede's successor.
"However, the idea has been met with resistance and it's only one person from the executive who wants the contract to be extended, although no decision has been taken on whether the contract will be extended or not," said the source.
Highlanders' board of directors' secretary Jimmy Ncube, one of the longest serving members, said: "We haven't come across this controversy. It hasn't been suggested to us as yet. What we know is that his contract ends in May, but when you're renewing a contract, you've to agree with the person first."
Highlanders are going through a transformation stage in line with the new club licensing requirements.
Once the new constitution is adopted at the club's mid-year meeting, the new board will then be made up of three board members, a chairman and his deputy, without necessarily going for elections.
